April Apple

2008 April Apple On-line Essay Form

April Apple is a program established in 1999 by the Kiwanis Club of Woodstock to encourage students of all ages to write and submit a short essay that recognizes a teacher or administrator who has had a positive influence or impact on their lives, either personally or academically. It not intended to be a popularity contest, but is designed to recognize teachers and administrators that may have gone beyond the normal classroom expectations and have had a real and profound impact on the development of a child. The Kiwanis club reviews these essays and selects those that they feel are truly noteworthy. The essays are not judged or selected on the basis of neatness, spelling, grammar, presentation, or length of story, but their substantive content.

Essay forms are delivered to the schools by Kiwanis members during the first two weeks of March. Essays to be submitted are picked up the first week in April. All schools are notified of the winners by mid April. The April Apple Awards Dinner is held the last week of April and invitations are hand delivered to the schools for the winning students, teachers, and administrators.

Key Club

Key Club is comprised of three organizational levels: Local, district, and international. Elected officers who serve on all three levels are high school students. The International and district organizations exist mainly to support and strengthen the local clubs. The following is a brief description of the three levels and how they work:

Local Club

There is no doubt that the local club is most important level of Key Club International. This is where the actual Key Club service takes place. Each club holds meetings, social functions, and conducts service projects to improve the school and community. Club officers include treasurer, secretary, vice-president, and president, who serves as the spokesperson and leader of the club. The club also elects a board of directors, which includes a representative from each grade level. The Kiwanis club currently sponsors a Key Club of approximately 50 students at Sequoyah High School.

District

There are thirty-one districts in Key Club International. Districts comprise all the local clubs within a geographical area, usually determined by state or region of the country. Districts exist to maintain and expand Key Club service within that area. Each district is subdivided into divisions. These divisions elect a lieutenant governor responsible for the clubs within that division. Other district officers include a treasurer, secretary, and governor, who serves as the spokesman for the district. Some districts elect officers to other positions as well.

International

The International Board consists of fourteen Trustees, the Secretary, and the President, who is the spokesperson for Key Club International.

The International Board sets policy, develops major emphasis programs, represents the opinions of its counseled districts, and provides all the necessary materials and services to districts and local clubs. These officers are elected at the annual Key Club International Convention in July.

Terrific Kids

In 2002, the Kiwanis Club of Woodstock initiated a the Terrific Kids program at Bascomb Elementary School.

Terrific Kids is a student recognition program that promotes character development, self esteem, and perseverance.  Students work with their classroom teacher and establish goals to improve behavior, peer relationships, attendance, or schoolwork.  Students then work toward achieving the goal during a specific time period.  The teachers and principal determine the best schedule of recognition.  Some schools recognize Terrific Kids during each grading period; others recognize student more often.

At the end of the designated time period, students who have exceeded expectations are recognized as Terrific Kids.  Recognition includes being pinned as a Terrific Kid, a presentation of certificates, and the award of prizes to the identified students.

Sam Deese Scholarship Award

Sam Deese joined the Kiwanis Club of Woodstock in December of 1998, and was it's President for the year 2000/2001. Sam reveled in the fact that the primary function of Kiwanis was the recognition of, and involvement with, the children of this community. He loved to do things for children. Whether it was parades at Christmas time or July 4th, participating in recognizing children for their achievements, or coordinating our April Apple program (letting children recognize teachers), Sam was always there.

Sam passed away in the Summer of 2002.   But his life was an example of what a true friend and humanitarian should be. Everyone who got to know him loved him. His honesty, dedication and sincerity of purpose were second to none. His presence at the club and within the community is greatly missed. In honor of Sam's commitment and achievements, as well as his great love for the children of the community, the Kiwanis Club of Woodstock has established this scholarship in his name. We all hope that Sam would appreciate that he is still helping the young people of this community even though he is no longer with us. Thanks Sam !!

2004 was the initial year for the scholarship and was only be made available to students at Sequoyah High School, where our club has a sponsored Key Club, with plans to open up the scholarship to all the Woodstock area high schools in subsequent years. Beginning in 2005  the scholarship was made available to Woodstock, Etowah and Sequoyah High Schools. This year the club will be awarding up to two $500 scholarships. A matching Presidential Freedom Scholarship is also available to qualified students (click here for information).

To be considered for this scholarship, each candidate must complete a formal application and provide at least one reference. The purpose of the application is to give the applicant an opportunity to describe themselves in terms of service to the community, good citizenship, and involvement with school, work and play. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the Student Services at your school or a member of the Woodstock Club of Kiwanis.

Kid's Meals on Wheels

During the summer months, children who qualify for the free school lunch program are often without healthy meals. In 1995 MUST Ministries began a “Kid's Meals on Wheels” delivery program to needy areas in Cobb County. This program has expanded into Cherokee County and continues to grow each year. The Kiwanis Club of Woodstock is pleased to be able to support MUST Ministries with funds and volunteers in this very worthy effort.

Shop With A Cop

Kiwanis Club of Woodstock proudly supports the Woodstock Police Department's annual "Shop With A Cop" program.  By raising funds for the Police Department, less fortunate children are given the opportunity to enjoy Christmas by either purchasing gifts for themselves or their families.  Each participant is provided with a Wal-Mart voucher to purchase gifts as they choose.  In addition to providing funds, members volunteer their time to offer complimentary wrapping.  Shop With A Cop was originated by the Woodstock Police Department and has grown to approximately 100 participants per year.
